Basic: Understanding Synonyms

This guide will help you understand synonyms and how to identify them in college entrance exams.

What are Synonyms?

Synonyms are words that have the same or nearly the same meaning as another word. Understanding synonyms is crucial for improving your vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Why are Synonyms Important for Exams?

College entrance exams often test your vocabulary through synonym questions. These questions assess your ability to recognize words with similar meanings, which demonstrates a strong understanding of the English language.

Types of Synonym Questions

You will typically be asked to choose the word or phrase that is closest in meaning to an underlined word or phrase.

Example:

Mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the word(s) CLOSEST in meaning to the underlined word(s) in each of the following questions.

The football final has been postponed until next week.
A. cancelled
B. delayed
C. finished
D. started

Answer: B. delayed (Postponed and delayed have similar meanings.)

How to Identify Synonyms

Here’s a step-by-step approach to tackling synonym questions:

  1. Understand the Underlined Word: First, make sure you understand the meaning of the underlined word in the sentence. If you don’t know the word, try to guess its meaning from the context of the sentence.

  2. Consider Each Option: Look at each of the answer choices (A, B, C, and D) and think about what each word means.

  3. Find the Closest Meaning: Choose the answer option that has the closest meaning to the underlined word.

  4. Confirm Your Answer: Read the sentence with your chosen synonym in place of the original word. Does the sentence still make sense? If so, you’ve likely found the correct synonym.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing words that sound similar but have different meanings: Be careful of words that have a similar sound but a different meaning than the underlined word.

  • Choosing words that are related but not synonyms: A related word might be connected to the original word but not have the same meaning. For example, “happy” and “joy” are synonyms, but “happy” and “smile” are related but not synonyms.

  • Not considering the context: The context of the sentence is very important. A word can have multiple meanings, so the sentence will help you choose the correct synonym.
